Strike Vote

You may have heard in the news that the BCTF will be holding a strike vote for teachers next week.  Details about what the strike would look like (it will not be a full scale strike) can be found at afairdeal.ca  While the outcome is uncertain at this point, you may like to learn more about what teachers are fighting for and what, if any, impact a vote in favour of striking might have on your family.  There is also a link on the site to help you write a letter to your MLA if you wish to have a say.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Pink Shirt Day

What GREAT participation for this important cause!  Our poor boys  (without sisters to borrow from), proudly sported a pink flower to show their support in this pic.

Young Actors Project

In support of our arts curriculum, and upcoming UOI, stories, the Kindergarten classes will be participating in a drama workshop presented by the Young Actors Project following Spring Break.  This is an excellent opportunity for students to be introduced to the art of acting as they practice their drama skills, gain self-confidence, and showcase their creativity.  We are collecting $5 from each student to cover the cost of this program – due Friday, March 7th.

Thanks!

Performance

We had a surprise arts performance in the gym this  morning.  I never knew "hoop dancing" existed until today - this performer shared some Native heritage with us and delivered the message that we are all one, and that we all belong.

Snow creations

These are the snow creations from yesterday that they didn't want you to  miss out on!  There was a bunny, heads, Katy Perry, Yoda, a Turtle, and some lovely snow people who shall remain nameless.

Enjoy!

100s week!

All this week, we will be focusing on the number 100 in Kindergarten.  We have been counting our way here, one day at a time and the big day is this Friday.  We are not asking for 100s projects from home so not to worry!  They are, however, being given time in partnerships to create a display of 100 in class.  This is open-ended and subject to their ideas and creativity so it should keep me on my toes all week!  Pictures to follow as the ideas flow in.  See if your child can explain to you how counting to 10 is all you need to do to reach 100!

Yukon Dan's Visit

Wow!  What an amazing presentation by Yukon Dan today.  We learned so much about minerals!  We got to touch them, pan for gold, look at garnet and gold through magnifying lenses and choose two minerals to take home.  They may have amethyst (purple), fool's gold, iron pyrite (silver colour), Citrine (yellow), or Tiger's eye (orange/black).

Did you know that wherever you find Jade or Copper, you will find Gold nearby?  Have you ever considered visiting the Fraser River in Yale?  Its a wealth of garnet, which is a reddish coloured stone that has lots of gold underneath it!  If you do decide to go gold panning, be sure to keep your hands out of the pan because the oils from your hands will make the gold float and easy to wash away unnoticed.

Cutural Day Thursday

I have just received the school-wide plan for cultural day tomorrow afternoon - I think it would be very helpful for us tomorrow if all families emailed me information on their cultural heritage ahead of time so that I can have something prepared to help the kindies along.

Your child's name in the subject line and one or two cultural identifiers in the body would be GREAT!

Playground pic

Captured a cute moment when genders finally collided in the form of a top secret huddle!  Gone is the boy gang and girl gang as they finally began playing TOGETHER for the first time last week.

Valentines Day

Valentines Day went off without a hitch...lots of excited energy and lots of love in the room.  Hope you enjoyed looking at all the cards with your child this weekend.

We also participated in some circuit training with Mrs. Wilson on Friday.  We got our hearts pumping and learned about healthy habits to keep our bodies and hearts happy.
